Prepare Yourself!

Preparedness…. it’s something I love, but not something I actually love doing.  I think if I could, I would fly by the seat of pants most days.  But thinking through and preparing for things actually makes my life and the life of my family better.  So, I prepare.  I prepare school lunches, snacks, diaper bags, the house for people to come over, dinner to share…. the list goes on and on.  But, there is nothing more important than preparing myself for the day and for what the Lord has for me.

spring planting

that’s what i have been doing lately- planting.  i love the anticipation of the beauty to come, visualizing in my head how things will look, what colors will do to the landscape, what is functional, what my kids will enjoy.  there is just so much joy in it.  and there is joy in hard work.  at the end of the day, i am so proud of myself for working hard and accomplishing things.  and then, in the months to come, i can actually enjoy the fruits of my labor.  it’s just good. That’s a tough word to swallow- self-hatred.  I mean, who really thinks that they actually hate themselves.  Yet, for most of us, we spend a good portion of our day being unloving to ourselves. You know- telling ourselves what we are not good at, that we are fat, that person doesn’t approve of you, you will never be like him/her, and on and on!  It’s such a vicious cycle.  And most likely it’s been passed down through generations. Often in the past, Lord, I have come to thee with a heavy heart and burdened life. And thou hast answered my prayers and graciously lifted the burden from me. Yet with strange perversion, I still refuse to leave my burdens with thee. Always I gather them up- those heavy bundles of fears and anxieties- and shoulder them again. -Peter Marshall
